The Risks of Self-medication to Your Health


Taking drugs not prescribed by your doctor is hazardous to your overall health. When you self-medicate, it could trigger other medical problems such as drug abuse and poisoning.

According to Wikipedia, Self-medication:

is a human behavior in which an individual uses a substance or any exogenous influence to self-administer treatment for physical or psychological ailments. The most widely self-medicated substances are over-the-counter drugs and dietary supplements, which are used to treat common health issues at home.

Self-medication is not a safe practice; it may cause side effects that could further medical complications, so it is advisable not to try to be your own doctor. Most of the times people do not know how harmful self medication can be and puts the individual at risk of adverse effects.

The risks of self-medication practices include the following:

  • Intake of expired drugs
  • Incorrect dosage
  • Worsening of the condition of the illness
  • Masking of severe diseases
  • Risk of dependence
  • Drug misuse
  • Risks of interactions of a drug with another drug or other substances

Self-medication may cause negative side effects to your overall health, so stop trying to be your own doctor and visit the hospital when you are sick. Ensure you use only the drugs administered to you by your doctor. Your health is priority, do not joke with it.
